Meet the Tutors

Our Circus Tutors are established street arts and circus artists in a variety of disciplines. From travelling around the world; performing at festivals, galas and prestige events to teaching their art to the next generation of circus artists, our tutors work tirelessly throughout the year. Let’s meet them!

Raul Canaz

Circus Tutor

In Mexico City, when he was 15 years of age, Raul taught himself to juggle with 3 limes. 13 years later, he has performed internationally in different countries like France, Mexico, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Norway, China, Lebanon, Israel. Specialising in slack wire and juggling, Raul focuses his teaching on balance, object manipulation and conditioning.

Raul believes Circus is one of the best things to learn, because other than from helping you develop physical skills like strength, coordination and flexibility it also helps you develop cognitive skills like attention, memory and visual and spatial processing; all of this resulting on feeling more confident and with more self esteem.

DISCIPLINES

  • Juggling (Balls, clubs, hats, rings, diabolo, etc)
  • Balance (Unicycle, Giraffe unicycle, Rola Bola, Tight Wire, Slack Rope etc)
  • Conditioning
  • Chinese Pole

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Professor at Mexico’s National Arts Centre for 5 years
  • Professor at SALTO International Circus School
  • Supported by Mexico’s Arts Council to create his slack wire act.

As well of being part of the cast of the show ‘Cirkunia’ by one of Mexico’s best circus companies Transito Cinco, he taught the whole cast to juggle and ride the unicycle and created the juggling and unicycle scenes.

HOBBIES

Other than relentlessly pursuing excellence in the circus arts, Raul likes to wind down with board games and, to the delight of the SeaChange Arts team, is currently learning to play the saxophone.

Fun fact, despite Raul’s daring tricks in his circus performances, he is actually afraid of heights.

Valeria Jauregui

Circus Tutor

Valeria Jauregui specialises in foot juggling and decided to after seeing a live performance by Selyna Bogino. Performing circus for 7 years, Valeria has performed internationally in countries such as Cuba, Mexico, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, China, Lebanon, Norway, Israel. Valeria focuses her teaching on balance, coordination and flexibility.

Valeria believes teaching circus to young people is great because circus is that space where you learn that everything is possible, where you defy gravity, where you push yourself each time to learn new skills and be better at them and where you develop positive thoughts with a can do attitude.
